What is checkmate?

The king is under attack and has no legal move to escape.

What is stalemate?

A player has no legal move but their king is not in check. The game is a draw.

Can pawns move backward?

No. Pawns move forward one square, or two on their first move, and capture diagonally.

What is castling?

A special move that moves the king two squares toward a rook and places the rook on the other side.
